Education

Kathryn M. Vorwald, DDS, MD, completed her bachelor’s degree at Augustana University. She received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry where she graduated with distinction. She was honored to receive the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Dental Student Award and was also inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. She then entered her residency at Ascension Health in the Detroit Metro area where she had wide exposure to trauma, plastic, oncologic, orthognathic, implant, and dentoalveolar surgery. She also received dedicated training in anesthesia and completed a year-long internship in general surgery. During her time in Detroit, she obtained her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Dr. Vorwald furthered her subspecialty training, completing an American Head and Neck Society Oncologic and Microvascular Surgical Fellowship program where she continued to develop the specialized skills required for complex treatment and reconstruction of head and neck cancer patients. This unique set of skills allowed her to utilize auto-transplanted tissues to reconstruct large defects created by the treatment of various diseases of the jaws and other organs in the head and neck region.

Expertise

Dr. Vorwald is a highly trained, board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon with years of experience managing complex issues involving the jaws and beyond. She maintains a patient-centered, friendly, down-to-earth, and honest approach with patients. She takes pride in providing detail-oriented, quality care and working closely with patients to help them achieve their goals.

In the Community

Following completion of her rigorous training, she felt a calling to dedicate her practice to helping head and neck cancer patients where she enjoyed helping them one-on-one to overcome some of the most challenging times in their lives. She practiced as a head and neck surgeon at Florida’s renowned Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute where she treated a variety of cancers of the mouth and other head and neck subsites. While practicing, she continued to develop a rich understanding of the complex facial, head and neck anatomy, reconstructive challenges, as well as the unconscious processes involved in everyday functions, such as eating and speaking. She also realized the profound value of true patient-centered care, where the patient-provider, decision-making process and interactions had a great impact on outcomes. During her time at Moffitt Cancer Center, she developed invaluable relationships with patients, staff, and providers, and received top patient ratings. She has also been named one of Tampa Bay’s Top Docs on multiple occasions.

Services

While cancer care afforded her valuable professional and life lessons, she was excited about transitioning her practice back to her true love of specialized dental services, particularly in the management of full mouth dental rehabilitation. The extraordinary arrangement and daily operation of the Lakeland facility enables an unprecedented working relationship between the patient, surgeon, and restorative dentist to optimize outcomes for patients desiring the very best in dental rehabilitation. This is coupled with some of the country’s best surgeons and staff to create a supportive environment. It is for these reasons that Dr. Vorwald feels confident in providing each of her patients with a positive experience as they begin to rebuild themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally – one smile at a time.
